5 facts about Kava

I'm sure you know how kava works - at least that is something like that. But as a traditional drink from a corner of the world quite exotic for us, the extract of methystine pepper still has many secrets. Will knowing them in any way increase the effectiveness of the drink? Well, no, but that does not mean that it is not worth reading something interesting about this drink, which is still new in Poland.

Chewed by the young.

Kava root contains a large amount of lactones, the most of which can be obtained by cold grinding and immediate extraction. And the activity that causes both of these effects to be obtained simultaneously - it crushes the roots and dissolves the compounds they contain - is chewing. Therefore, it will come as no surprise to anyone that most traditional kava cultures envisioned chewing the roots and spitting the mass out into a bowl that had just been diluted with water.

However, since here and there it was not so much a recreational as a ritual drink, it was concluded that the most effective for full properties would be chewing by adolescents before sexual initiation. Depending on the island, only young men, virgins, or both sexes were allowed to take part in the activities.

Kava needs to grov for 5 years.

The most valued varieties of noble kava are produced from the rhizomes of plants that are at least five years old. It takes this amount of life for methystine pepper to deposit in the root the amount of active substances that will show the desired effect. By the way - thanks to the fact that mature plants are harvested, traditional kava plantations are not particularly intensively cultivated. They are mostly organic crops where time and weather conditions are the key to success.

Kava has reached the Vatican.

Kava has been hailed as one of the most important discoveries of recent years, but in the Vatican, it was hardly expected. Meanwhile, in 2015, samples of the products were delivered to the Vatican as a gift by the inhabitants of the Pacific islands, who were visiting. It is not known whether they were prepared according to the recipe, submitted for research or lost in the Vatican dungeons. It is known that much earlier, in 1986, the kava cup was drunk by John Paul II, who was visiting Fiji at that time. As they say, what a rich cottage is - after all, Fiji is an important link in the kava market

Kava with almost no Kava.

The way kava works is not unique. They can be imitated if kavalactones are replaced with melatonin, tryptophan or valerian, i.e. valerian. Exactly these ingredients are added to many cheaper products that are described as kava, but kava is hardly present. You do not need specialized research to find out what is in the package - often reading the ingredients is enough. What's more - one production line can be used for kava, the effectiveness of which is due to the natural composition, and various types of preparations that owe their properties practically only to such additives.

The problem is that such enrichment complicates the composition and means that while the properties remain similar, the list of side effects potentially changes - so it will be better to stick to kava from good plantations.

Kava for smoking.

All Pacific cultures came up with one method of preparing kava - it's best to prepare an aqueous extract with the addition of fats. Of course, it turned out that this is not the only option - the best, but not the only one. You can also smoke kava. Its preparation is quite difficult, and there is no suitable raw material on sale, but there are people who mix methistine pepper root with other herbs for inhalation.

Why is this method not particularly advantageous? Firstly, because kavalactones are not very willing to go into the gas phase, and secondly because they are fat-soluble and are not absorbed very well without them. You suspect that the people of the Pacific islands also came up with the idea of smoking, but apparently came to the conclusion that it would be best to stick to a simple, pleasant and much more effective form of ingestion of these roots
